Pain is a universal phenomenon we all recognize, but measuring and identifying it in chickens remains a challenge. While advanced systems already exist for mammals like cows and pigs, research in poultry is still relatively limited.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The webinar explored the impact of pain, how to recognize it, and how to manage it. Just like athletes, chickens need optimal conditions to perform well\u2014and pain can significantly hinder that. Our guest speaker, Patricia Soster Carvalho\u2014poultry consultant at Vetworks, Study Director at Poulpharm, and PhD candidate specializing in poultry welfare\u2014shared her insights on this complex and often underestimated topic.<\/p>\n<h3>What is pain, and how can it be assessed?<\/h3>\n<p>Patricia opened her presentation with an explanation of what pain actually is. Pain perception is a complex process that occurs in remarkably similar ways across species. Nociceptors detect signals that are processed through various stages in the central nervous system, resulting in the experience of pain. In chickens, numerous factors can cause pain, including environmental stressors, infectious diseases, and musculoskeletal disorders. Depending on its duration and nature, pain is classified as either acute or chronic. Acute pain typically lasts from seconds to a few days and may be caused by issues such as feather pecking. Chronic pain, in contrast, can persist for weeks or even years, as seen with footpad lesions or lameness. For certain types of pain, like lameness, scoring systems exist in which a chicken\u2019s gait is rated on a scale from one to five.<\/p>\n<p>However, pain assessment remains largely subjective. Objective tools to measure pain in poultry should minimize bias and avoid stress from handling. By observing chickens\u2019 behavior before and after administering analgesics, specific pain responses can be more accurately identified\u2014contributing to both animal welfare and productivity. Traditional indicators such as weight, feed, and water intake still offer value, but physiological and clinical parameters\u2014like scoring footpad lesions\u2014can also provide reliable insights into pain levels.<\/p>\n<p>Patricia\u2019s research focuses on the use of sound and image analysis to detect pain and reduced welfare in poultry houses. By applying these technologies, pain signals can be assessed more objectively and in real time. Similar systems are already used commercially in pig farming. The ultimate goal is to develop a comparable system for poultry houses\u2014a significant step forward in improving both welfare and performance.<\/p>\n<h3>Pain management<\/h3>\n<p>In the second part of the webinar, Kristof Haems, Technical Support Veterinarian at Dopharma, discussed pain management in chickens using salicylates. Salicylates are among the oldest known medicines, used as pain relievers and anti-inflammatories since ancient Greek and Egyptian times. Currently, the two main veterinary salicylates are aspirin and sodium salicylate. While various painkillers and anti-inflammatories are registered for pigs and cows, options for chickens remain limited. Until recently, aspirin was the only registered product for chickens, but Dopharma has now succeeded in registering sodium salicylate under the brand name Dophacyl Avi.<\/p>\n<p>Although aspirin and sodium salicylate share a similar structure and mechanism of action, key differences remain. Both inhibit COX enzymes, which convert membrane phospholipids into prostaglandins\u2014compounds involved in pain sensitivity and inflammation. Aspirin stands out because it can donate an acetyl group, causing irreversible inhibition of the COX enzymes. Both substances are metabolized into salicylic acid in the body, which not only reduces COX expression but also offers additional anti-inflammatory and antioxidant benefits. The resulting decrease in prostaglandins leads to reduced inflammation, less pain, and a fever-reducing effect.<\/p>\n<p>Despite being equally effective in human studies, aspirin carries a higher risk of side effects due to its irreversible COX-1 inhibition. However, when used at the recommended dosage and duration, this risk remains minimal for both compounds. Solubility is another major difference: sodium salicylate is highly water-soluble\u2014up to 250 g\/l regardless of water hardness\u2014while aspirin dissolves much less easily (3\u20136 g\/l). However, sodium salicylate is sensitive to low pH and should not be combined with acidic products, as it then converts to virtually insoluble salicylic acid.<\/p>\n<p>Dophacyl Avi is registered for chickens that do not produce eggs for human consumption or are intended to lay eggs at a later stage. The product\u2019s SPC allows for broad indications, making it suitable in practice for mild to moderate pain and fever. Field experience and positive feedback support its effectiveness in cases such as lameness, post-vaccination reactions, heat stress, stressful periods like partial depopulation in broilers, and as a supportive treatment during infections.<\/p>\n<h3>Conclusion<\/h3>\n<p>Recognizing and managing pain in chickens remains an under-addressed yet crucial aspect of poultry farming. The webinar made clear how pain impacts not only animal welfare but also productivity. Thanks to new insights and technological advances\u2014like sound and image analysis\u2014pain signals can now be identified more rapidly and objectively. With the recent registration of Dophacyl Avi, Dopharma offers a valuable new tool for managing pain in chickens, empowering poultry farmers to improve their animals\u2019 well-being and productivity.
