Phenoxypen® now also authorised for use in pigs
A new indication for pigs offers a practical, effective, and targeted treatment for streptococcal infections.
Raamsdonksveer, the Netherlands, 19 March 2026 – Phenoxypen® (phenoxymethylpenicillin or penicillin V) now offers, thanks to the recent extension of its marketing authorisation, a new treatment option for the common streptococcal infections in pigs. Last week, the European registration procedure was completed, allowing Phenoxypen® to be used in pigs in all 19 countries where the product is already authorised for poultry. The product is introduced to the market years ago by Dopharma as a unique narrow‑spectrum penicillin for administration via drinking water for chickens.
Practical and effective approach with a narrow‑spectrum penicillin
Penicillins are considered the most effective treatment option for streptococcal infections in pigs. Phenoxypen® contains the narrow‑spectrum penicillin phenoxymethylpenicillin, enabling an effective and targeted treatment. In addition, the product is highly water‑soluble and acid‑resistant, making it practical and suitable for oral administration through drinking water.
Significance for the pig sector
The availability of a narrow‑spectrum penicillin for administration via drinking water is an important contribution to the One Health objectives in pig farming. Thanks to the targeted Gram‑positive spectrum of phenoxymethylpenicillin, streptococcal infections can now be treated effectively while exerting less selective pressure on Gram‑negative bacteria. As a result, resistance development is reduced, and pigs maintain better gut health compared to the use of broad‑spectrum antibiotics.
